Well, Obama asked…

This is what I posted on President Obama’s website after getting an e-mail asking me to share my “health-care story.”  Every word’s true…

The short version is that I recently changed jobs and had to switch health-care providers as a result. The change in health-care packages translated to almost a $5000 difference in my salary, and being lower-middle class, that pretty much leaves me with less than ideal health-care, not to mention less pocket money.

On top of that, I am not actually able to receive health care through my new job until I have been there for three months (meaning I am not covered until August). Normally, at this point, COBRA would be a reasonable option for most people. However, were I to sign up for COBRA, it would cost me about half of my monthly salary. Not an option. So, I am just living through the next couple of months hoping I don’t get very sick or have to be taken to a doctor after some sort of accident, because there isn’t a realistic government-provided option for people at my pay-scale.

I know I don’t have it as bad as many…but that doesn’t mean I don’t feel it. I thank God that I’m in decent health and don’t have greater needs…but I also pray to Him every night that there will be relief coming for those who don’t have it as good as I do. My loss is an irritant…but there are absolute horror-stories out there.

Thank you, Mr. President, for your compassion and benevolence. And thank you for your time.

So that’s the America I live in…and with my mouth in throbbing pain this week, I sure wish it weren’t.  Here’s hoping for a better tomorrow.
