In an unprecedented move, I’m actually going to say something nice about a Republican politician. As you’re all probably aware by now, there was a bru-ha-ha last week when Senator McCain actually said a few words defending Senator ThatOne (one of my new favorite nicknames for Obama) at a “town hall” type rally. Straight from the horse’s (McCain) mouth–emphasis added:
[A woman referred to Obama as “an Arab.” McCain cut her off and seized the microphone from her hands.] “No, ma’am. He is a decent family man with whom I happen to have some disagreements.”
[Later]”I have to tell you he is a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States,”
[Also later]“If you want a fight, we will fight,” McCain replied. “But we will be respectful. I admire Senator Obama and his accomplishments. I don’t mean that has to reduce your ferocity. I just mean to say you have to be respectful.”
A Liberal I may be…but I’m also fair. I don’t like McCain. I will not vote for McCain. I disagree with McCain on almost every major issue, except for abortion. But… THAT was a genuinely classy move.
…the fact that his own supporters (gathered at that meeting) went on to boo him for saying that tells you a lot, though…
